Are you prepared to transform your passion for photography into a thriving freelance enterprise? This guide will give you all the tips I’ve learned along the way. I’m only 3 years into my full-time freelance journey, so take what you can from this; however, it’s not the gospel!

CULTIVATING YOUR UNIQUE VISION

Defining Your Photographic Signature: Amidst the sea of photographers, it’s crucial to carve a distinctive path. Nurture your artistic flair, explore diverse genres, and experiment with techniques that align with your unique vision. This is not necessarily the same as finding your niche and only sticking to it. If you’re someone like me who enjoys photography across many genres, market that! The variety of clients I have is what keeps my job interesting. A perfect example of this is that last weekend, I photographed a DJ set on Friday night, and on Saturday I shot some rural senior photos on a farm. Variety is the spice of life!.. or something like that. If you use my website as an example, it showcases the variety of work I do, which then opens me up to a larger client pool.

HARNESSING THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Building a Professional Arsenal: Your camera is more than a mere tool; it’s what makes our world go round! Invest wisely – I mean WISELY. Do NOT just go out and buy the most expensive gear you can thinking you will become a better photographer. If you have gear already, research and learn everything about the gear you have. You’d be surprised what a little technical knowledge will do for your image quality! If you don’t have gear already, then I would suggest investing in a camera on the lower end of your budget to learn the ropes and to see if you even enjoy photography. If you come out of your incubation period feeling you want to keep pursuing photography, then consider investing in higher budget gear (you can always sell the gear you bought to put toward cost!) Consider essential equipment like lenses, lighting, tripods, and other accessories that enhance your technical prowess before jumping to a new camera right away. Remember, a well-informed artist yields remarkable results.

SHOWCASING EXCELLENCE

Crafting an Impressive Portfolio: A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a captivating portfolio speaks volumes. Compile a collection of your finest work, curating a visual narrative that highlights your talent, versatility, and technical expertise. No one wants to come to your website to see everything you’ve ever shot, ever. Only showcase your best work. 5 amazing photos per shoot is more enticing than 50 mediocre ones. Consider that scarcity creates interest – you want people to want to see more of your work and contact you. Your portfolio needs to be treated like your Instagram: showcase the “best” moments. You don’t want them to make the decision to not hire you before starting the conversation. Allow your portfolio to become a captivating story that entices clients to experience your unique artistry firsthand.

TAILORING YOUR APPROACH

Customizing Pricing for Individual Projects: While a base rate provides a foundation, tailoring your pricing for specific projects and clients ensures a more accurate representation of the value you deliver. Consider the complexity and scope of each project, the location, the duration of the shoot, image usage rights, and the client’s budgetary constraints. Embracing flexibility enables you to cater to diverse clientele while optimizing your earning potential.

I can’t stress this enough, at least for me, I have a broad spectrum of clients which means not every client pays the same price. This does not mean that you should be overcharging certain clients based on their perceived wealth; however, it’s important to consider the scope of the client. For example, if Target were to approach you for a campaign they want to have in all of their stores, you probably wouldn’t charge them the same as a local business who has a much smaller reach/audience. Target is going to profit exponentially more off of your photos than the local business will, therefore scaling your pricing to match your clients will ensure that you too are making what you deserve.

MASTERING THE ART OF PROMOTION

Strategic Marketing for Success: So you’ve taken a slew of sick photos; now it’s time to captivate your audience. Establish a compelling online presence through a professionally designed website and targeted social media platforms. Social media is the unfortunate reality of being a freelancer. Unless you’re leaving the industry to start on your own business with connections already, it’s extremely difficult to succeed without social media accounts. You could be the best candidate for a job but you might not get hired simply because you cant be found. Engage with potential clients through captivating content, behind-the-scenes, and exclusive glimpses into your creative process. Watch as your brand presence builds, attracting your ideal client. It’s also important to note: post work for the kind of clients you want to attract! If you want to be a concert photographer, but you don’t showcase that work on your site or socials, how will anyone know you want to do that? Let there be no shame in letting the people know what you do and what you want to do.

PRICING WITH PRECISION

Striking the Perfect Balance: Determining your worth as a freelance photographer is a crucial step on your journey to success. Research industry standards, evaluate your expenses meticulously, and reflect upon the unique value you bring to each project. Find the delicate equilibrium that aligns your creative passion with skill level, profitability, and investment; ensuring a sustainable and rewarding business venture.
