The Neighbourhood. Does the name ring a bell and you’re not sure why? You’ve probably heard of them.. even if you dont think you have. This now poppy, alternative rock band formed in Newbury Park, California in 2011. The band is made up of vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman & Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Brandon Alexander Fried. They put out their first EPs Im Sorry and Thank You between conception and throughout 2012. The Neighbourhood has been regularly releasing albums ever since including I Love You (2013), #00000 & #FFFFF (2014), Wiped Out! (2015) & most recently, Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones (2020).
And as a little fun fact from the writer herself, In 2017, Jesse released his own EP album featuring a track with Dylan Brady – who you might know for his production for band 100 Gecs. If you know them, you know how wildly different their style of music is.

Their first real hit song released in 2012, appropriately named “Sweater Weather” for its early year release. This song put the band on the map when “Sweater Weather” reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in June 2013, and stayed there for a ground breaking eleven non-consecutive weeks at the top of the chart.
Thanks to the viral age and a little app called TikTok, over the ten-week period spanning the tracking week of Aug. 21-27-20 to this past tracking week (Oct. 23-29), the song has grown in total on-demand streams every week, rising from 3.2 million in late August to now 5 million — an overall gain of 56%. The band has grown exponentially over the last 10 years and now has over 18.5 million monthly listeners (updated as of July 2021).
Experiencing their melodic tunes right before the release of their newest album, Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones at a smaller venue, such as the Fillmore, made this a much more intimate experience for the audience. With the opening act debuting Chip Chrome himself, it certainly was a surprise for their fans as lead Jesse Rutherford came out painted and dressed in his full Chip Chrome get-up (which he got out of in record time between the first and second song).

The roughly 90 minute show consisted of 18 songs in their line up from various albums – along with a preview of “Lost in Translation” which was released on their latest album. Rutherford’s sweet & soft voice was just as hypnotic in person as it is on every Neighbourhood album, which carried a cool, California sound throughout the venue. The Neighbourhood’s calm and collected performance invites the audience to enjoy their show how they see fit, without all the bells and whistles most bands at their level of notoriety indulge in.
